Investigation Report 03/2020: Operation Balaton—An investigation into the misuse of an official credit card by an AFP appointee

Operation Balaton considered an allegation an Australian Federal Police (AFP) Federal Agent used their corporate credit card to withdraw an estimated $56,273 in cash without the AFP’s approval. At the time of the alleged conduct, the Federal Agent was the Executive Officer to the then AFP Commissioner and as part of this role, was required to pay for, and acquit, both the Commissioner’s and their own travel expenses. While Operation Balaton was a joint ACLEI/AFP investigation, the majority of the investigative work was undertaken by the AFP. The Integrity Commissioner made one finding of corrupt conduct against the AFP Federal Agent, finding the Federal Agent withdrew a total of $45,050 in cash for their own benefit.
