Investigation into alleged corrupt conduct by a Serco Detention Services Officer

The Integrity Commissioner and head of the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity (ACLEI), Ms Jaala Hinchcliffe, has today published the investigation report on Operation Johnston.

Operation Johnston was an investigation into whether a Detention Service Officer employed by Serco Australia Pty Ltd (Serco) was receiving money in exchange for providing drugs to detainees at Sydney’s Villawood Immigration Detention Centre (VIDC).

The joint investigation by ACLEI and the Department of Home Affairs did not identify any evidence of the Serco Detention Service Officer receiving money from, or providing contraband to, any detainees at VIDC.

Although Commissioner Hinchcliffe did not make any findings of corruption, she noted the importance of investigating allegations such as these and providing assurance that the alleged corrupt conduct has not occurred.

The investigation report for Operation Johnston is available on the ACLEI website.
