Investigation into alleged corrupt conduct by a Serco Detention Services Officer

The Integrity Commissioner and head of the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity (ACLEI), Ms Jaala Hinchcliffe, has today published the investigation report on Operation Sale.

Operation Sale was an investigation into an allegation that Detention Services Officers employed by Serco Australia Pty Ltd (Serco), including an officer later identified as Officer Y, were assisting a detainee to facilitate the supply of drugs into Sydney’s Villawood Immigration Detention Centre (VIDC) as well as providing tip-offs to assist that detainee to avoid raids.

The investigation did not identify any evidence of Officer Y facilitating the supply of drugs into VIDC or providing tip-offs to detainees about upcoming raids. As the investigation did not uncover any evidence to support a conclusion that Officer Y engaged in corrupt conduct, Ms Hinchcliffe made no findings of corruption.

Although the Integrity Commissioner did not make any findings of corruption, she noted the importance of investigating allegations such as these and providing assurance that the alleged corrupt conduct has not occurred.

The investigation report for Operation Sale is available on the ACLEI website.
